Yankees vs. Sox (again)

Here we go again! Good Guys vs. Bad Guys and this time it’s four games in the Bronx. One word: Whoooooooooohooooooooyaaaahaaaaaaahaaa!

Will the series lose its fervor due to a rash of recent injuries? Sheffield and Matsui are on the DL with hurt wrists. And, Rivera hurt himself bending over. Michael Kay has got to be next. But, the Yanks are on a tear. The big Unit looks strong and their outfield replacements are Melky and Long. Let’s hope they all take a beating!

We’re missing Willy Mo, again with an hurt wrist. Timlin tore a muscle smiling. As usual Wells put in his contract that he would be paid per appearance (on the DL). And, Clement is pitching. (That’s an injury the whole team must bear.) It tells you something about the state of our staff when every Sox fan can name three or four pitchers we have in the minors.

Regardless, there will be a carnival atmosphere at Thom’s next week. It’ll be a real howl. It’s going to be a regular Canobee Lake Park:

You asked for it and you got it. No more Kay. Next week we’re going to pick three innings during the game and let you broadcast them. Do play-by-play or color commentary. Just yell "chowder" the whole time. But, come in and exercise your first amendment right to shut Kay up! Sign-ups are online first. So e-mail me if you want to take part.

When you arrive don’t forget to touch (wash your grimy hands first) the "World Series Bunting". Direct from Busch Stadium comes a piece of history. The place was St. Louis. The time was Game 4 of the 2004 World Series. A ground ball was "stabbed by Foulke" and soon thereafter mayhem broke loose. A new era began. In the middle of it all were two itinerant New Yorkers on hand for history (No, not Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon). They weren’t Sox fans, so they didn’t rush the field. What they did was think of little old me. They ripped the official nine-foot long red, white, and blue bunting off of the wall and shoved it in their shirt. When a park official asked them what they were doing. They answered "That guy said we could have it", and ran as his head turned. Genius! Daring! The bunting made it all the way to New York City and into my hands. Come see for yourself this piece of history. It will be hanging on the wall by the bar for the whole series.

Monday Night we’ll be having a rivalry of our own. Some of the brightest Yankee fans in the city are coming in (be polite) to match wits with our most knowledgeable Sox fans in a baseball trivia battle. It’s not to late to take part. If you think you know the Red Sox or know someone who knows the Yankees inside and out, let me know. By the way, our "game show host" is one of the guys that ripped-off the bunting. Give him a pat on the back.

As always, Jim will be giving away anything he can get his hands on with game-long raffles. When you get there ask what the specials are so you can get your tickets.

If that’s not enough, we’ll be making up more as we go along. We have four games to get this right so send me your suggestions. Rhonda got the mojo working two weeks ago by tearing up her pin-striped shirt while the Sox were losing. It worked, for a little while. But, she lacked help. What are you willing to do to help your team?

Nelly Kelly loved baseball games,
Knew the players, knew all their names,
You could see her there ev'ry day,
Shout "Hurray" when they'd play.

Little Wily Mo

Little Wily Mo, Wily won't go home
But you can't push Wily 'round Wily won't go
Try tellin' everybody but, oh no
Little Wily Mo, Wily won't go home . . .
-Nicky Chinn, Mike Chapman

I thought the tide was going to turn when Rhonda took off her pin-striped shirt and cut it into shreds. (If you weren't there, you'll have to ask someone that was. WOW!) Manny instantly hit a home run, but Wily was stopped in his tracks and we were subjected to 10 minutes of Michael Kay gloating. There have been several requests to press the SAP button when the YES broadcasts are on. Let me know what you think.

The MFY took 2 out of 3 but the rivalry doesn't end there. Next Wednesday 4 Yankee fans are coming in to take on 4 Red Sox fans in a baseball trivia challenge. The teams aren't set yet, so if you think you know your Red Sox let me know and you could be on the team.

Thanks to all of you that stuck around for the screening of "Red Sox Stories". If you were in it and want a copy let me know.

I asked for your blogs and here they are:

He may be an East Village Idiot but he loves the Sox.

If you hate the Riv you're in good company with Michael Legett. Read his romantic ramblings on Random Fandom. And, find out what "F*** Kaczmarczyk" means.

If you care at all about sheep do not open WelshSoxFan's website. He probably has the best reason to root for the Red Sox: they were the closest team to his home in WALES!

The omnipresent Q hits us every day with The Mighty Quinn Media Machine. The most prolific blogger on the planet, yesterday Quinn cheered me up with his recounting of the best game I ever attended: September 10, 1999 at the Toilet. It was the first time I ever got thrown out of Yankee Stadium.

He's not Sully, he's the Suldog and here's his blog.

And lastly is this idiot that seems to be copying almost everthing that I write.

You love her
But she loves him
And he loves somebody else
Ya just can't win
And so it goes
Till the day you die
This thing they call love
It's gonna make you cry
I've had the blues
The reds and the pinks
One thing's for sure...

E-Rod

Do you ever get the feeling that A-Rod owns himself in fantasy basbeball?

His homerun last night in the ninth reminded me of a Saturday in early February 1978. Sammy White's Bowling Lanes was closed due to the fact that their roof caved in from too much snow, but somehow, "Candlepins for Cash" was still on the air. (I guess the Wal-Lex had better builders.) Anyway, some shlub named Dave DiStefano was down 32 pins to Dennis McHugh going into the last frame. He was sure to lose when the RED PIN showed up! If DiStefano got a strike on the "Red Pin Frame" he would win a shit load of money. (A couple of sawbucks, I think. I was 5 years old, $20 was a lot of money!) The show's host Bob Gamere did his best Michael Kay impression trying to rev up the crowd as DiStefano tossed his meaningless blue-swirl ball for a money making strike. In the end DiStefano lost the game, though. I think he's at Walpole now for pulling a guy out of his car on the Mass. Ave. Bridge. I miss those tonic machines that spit out a cup, then syrup, then soda water. What the hell was I talking about? Oh yeah, Bob Gamere was pretty cool.

The End.

(Bob Gamere, now)

Anyway the Sox won last night and many of you (3) won prizes. They'll be more fun tonight.

Thanks to Stephanie for our mention in her great NY Post article and her adeptness at pulling a raffle ticket.
Just when I thought I had the scoop on the Post piece one of our resident bloggers, John Q. Redsocksphan, sent me his take on Jim's omnipresence. Check it out.

Which reminds me: Got a blog? Send it in and I'll send them out in an all blog e-mail.

NEWS FLASH! Gary Sheffield was stopped at the tolls in Weston for running the Fast Lane. He's on his way to Walpole (Sorry, MCI Cedar Junction for you Walpole residents) to share a cell with DiStefano.

Come on and zoom, zoom, zoom-a zoom!
We're gonna zoom-a, zoom-a, zoom-a, zoom-a zoom!
Everybody's movin' it, everybody's doin' it,
Everybody's havin' a ball, yeah!
So would you zoom, zoom, zoom-a zoom?
Come on and zoom-a zoom-a zoom-a zoom!
I'm Chris! --

Yankees at Red Sox

Two words should be enough for this massive missive: RedSox, Yankees.
(They should be, but they're not, because I'm a verbose bastard.)

It's time again to take on the MFY. It's in Boston, so you should be at Thom's.

This time around the Socks find themselves up a game and an half looking to leave the MASH Unit Formerly Known As The Yankees in the dust. Chacon went on the DL today and Giambi is due to hurt himself with that grotesque smile of his any day now. As always there will be give-aways and raffles and booze. Yes booze. So come on down.

In The News

Big thanks to Tessie who sent us a DVD of the footage the Red Sox took at Thom's a couple of weeks ago. The interviews with Jim McGuire, the regulars, and me appeared on "Red Sox Stories" last Sunday on TV38. Just to think that I was on a show that in someway supplanted "The Movie Loft" is enough to make this boy from Brighton cry. Look for a screening of the show at Thom's in the near future ( i.e. everyday).

Pick up a copy of today's post to read what your bartender, Jim McGuire, has to say about accepting contracts to build the new Toilet. Oh hell, I'll just tell you: 'Red Sox fans said they're happy to leave the job to a New York company. "They'll overpay and be disappointed - just like having A-Rod on their team," said Jim McGuire, co-owner of Professor Thom's, a Bosox-friendly bar in Manhattan.' Like Savoir Faire, Jim's everywhere.

"Did he ever return,
No he never returned
And his fate is still unlearn'd He may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston He's the man who never returned

14-3 Good Guys

"Red Sox Punish the Sloppy Yankees " -NY TIMES

The only thing that would have made that headline better is if they said "Slappy" instead. E-Rod crushed the Yankees chances with a couple of bad errors. But, unfortunately, he wasn't alone. The Big Unit was a bit flaccid. Past balls, walks, and meat balls made for an entertaining evening.

Thanks to all of you that came out and a special thanks to Sarah Logan and Colleen "Tessie" Reilly from the Red Sox for conducting on-camera interviews all night. They promised that they'd be back for more.

Don't forget that there are two more games and more give-aways. We'll have cases of Harpoon, and gift certificates, and gear.

Rain Out

So you think you got it bad getting $3 Harpoons during Sox games? You could be a Chinese man in Rome paying $1200 for a crappy beer. (Why didn't he just order wine?)

Rome tourist parched after $1,200 beer.

The beat goes on and the $3 Harpoon continues to pour (for now). We'll be introducing new specials soon. Come on in for the rest of the Toronto series and the Orioles series this weekend.

The bad news is the second Yankee game got rained out, the great news is that means we swept the series! Hazar!

That was by far the best so game this year. With all of the T-shirt, hat, and beer give-aways I hope you left with more than you came with. If not, than it all starts over next week.
The Sox come to town Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. But, first we're trying to bring the cast of "YES Network's Ultimate Roadtrip" to Thom's on Monday night for our weekly trivia challenge. It will be Sox fans versus Yankees fans in their town, but on our turf. Come cheer on some of the leading Sox experts this side of the East River and stay for Trivia night where you could win gift certificates to use during the Yankee series.
Also, we need your help. What would be the appropriate punishment for the ultimate Yankee fans that lose to our boys?

Are you a Patriot? Are you really? Because Monday, April 17 is Patriots Day and the Red Sox are playing their arch nemesis: the Mariners. (Da Da Dum!)Professor Thom's will be open at 11 am to make sure that you see the game. We couldn't live with ourselves if you missed it.And, don't forget that Monday is also Marathon Day. Come on by to see for yourself just which Kenyan will win this year. You never know, you might see history in action. An Ethiopian might win. (Is John Kelley still running? If so I want him to win.)

So come join the family at Professor Thom's for Patriots Day.Remember, you can't go wromg with Professor Thom. You are on this list because you're special.
